2. WHAT ARE COOKIES AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Cookies are small text files that websites store on the hard drive of your computer or mobile device. For example, they collect information about your personal preferences, website visits and device in order to improve the functionality and user experience of the websites. The cookie contains a unique code that allows you to recognize your browser during the visit to the website (a so-called 'session' cookie) of bij latere, herhaalde bezoeken (een zogenaamde 'permanente' cookie). or during later, repeated visits (a so-called 'permanent' cookie). A cookie consists of a (unique) number or value. It does not contain any personal data. The use of cookies is regulated by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union through e-Privacy Directive 2002/58/EC. All EU Member States have now transposed that directive into national law. This implies that cookie usage and cookie legislation are regulated differently in each European country. In Belgium this is done through an adapted version of art. 129 of the law of 13 June 2005 on electronic communications.
